I have been told to review the literary book; Amour Maternel (Mother's Love) written by Dr Mark A. C. Ogbodo. One may wonder what concerns a Medical Doctor with literary work. "ARTICULATED EMOTION!" Dr Mark is a consciencious, intelligent, diligent and ever successful scholar. Hence, a writer! A writer with great articulated emotion. Most writings are purgation of emotion. And from my view point, emotion is the hidden tap root of this exposition (the book).

This book, entitled "Amour Maternel" (Mother's Love) written by Dr Mark A. C. Ogbodo contains 68 pages in 8 chapters. In this prose work, the author uses characters to draw the attention of the reader to what is expected of a mother in bearing, nurturing and equipping a child for greater life's challenges, in order to build a happy and stable human that would maintain a healthy and cordial social relationship.

Whatever I have to say is built on the central theme which is "Mother's Love" that generates real human that impact life positively.

Nevertheless, my view cannot give full detail of what the book has to expose concerning mother-child relationship, in tune of away-from- home relationship. And this is the reason everyone needs to read the book; "Amour Maternel".

From the beginning to the end, the author paints a family that is in the paramount need of recollection of humanity that is from the onset was trashed from the "tray of love", out of self esteem of the mother. The book exposes the ugliness of pursuing material acquisition against devouting quality time with love and consciousness of making a functional human being.

The author has explored the impact of lack of maternal love extensively. This runs through the chapters; from the period of child dependence to adult-independence, using the power of description that appeals to senses. Hence as you read, you are catarpulted into the scenes and integrated with the actions.

The joy of having a child could be marred by lack of motherly devout care. A mother who only pursues her career ends up distorting the expected mother/child relationship. And what's the resultant effect? The child gets bonded and fond of the father or available caregiver who spends more time with the child. Of course, closeness intrigues sense of love. So, whom a child is close to, wins her love.

Little wonder, Ojela was badly impacted, in character and academics as her father, who is her friend indeed dies. Thus, she escapes to solitude. Amour Maternel portrays a vivid picture of how psychological abnormal behaviours take over a cherished daughter when her widowed mother abandons her to acquisition of wealth and fame - Ojela escapes to a course of study that would hide her, in conformity with her live-alone acquired attitude. She becomes a reserved person, she rebuffed familiarisation even among her equals. She is easily provoked and would exhibit mistrust, throw tantrums, and even threaten to kill herself. How can Ojela give what she does not have? She is devoid of love and cannot give love to anyone! She lives without love all alone in the corner and distanced from people with no comforting ear. She is lost in the desert. Yet she has a living mother! What a mother?

All that the mother provided for her material needs is not measurable to maternal love, thus, she keeps being hungry and in search of love. Amidst the suitors; she looks out for her father's replica. A string of life in Ojela is the ways of her father, the light on her being is the manner of her father's doings. Hence, Okekeni (the successful suitor) can only awaken her love by referring to her as "...beautiful Princess", chapters 2 and 6, as the father would identify her. Lying side by side with this joy is the maternal deprivations that denied her mother's presence which make her be in want of attention cum love.

This original inspirational piece of work has come at a very good time when chaos avail in relationships at social settings. Therefore, reading of this book is highly important. Everybody needs to read this book. It will help prospective fiancĂ©, fiancĂ©e, young and elderly spouse, teachers at all levels of social institutions, counsellors at every works of life, etc. This book should be found in the library of every household, school, Church, hospital, correction centres, counsellors' office, etc

Reading of AMOUR MATERNEL is a necessity to avoid a battered life and relationship.

Thanks.

Untold, Novella, by Mark A. C. Ogbodo

The night that stood in the hunter's way to save an innocent baby's life, was removed with just three bullets. Just three bullets. Onyila, the head warrior never lived to tell the story, and due to lack of true knowledge and refusal to learn something new, he died an ignominious death.

Decades later, uncertainty looms, as calamity befalls Ahinyohe, a descendant of Onyila, the head warrior who had taken the life of a new born baby, on the order of the kindred head, for being born breeched. The sins of a forefather are assumed to have been visited upon the offspring. But could this be true? And why will an offspring suffer for what he knows nothing about? This is a mystery to be unraveled in the course of reading this great piece.

Narrating the Novella, Untold, written by Mark A. C. Ogbodo

Narrating the Untold: A Review of Mark A. C. Ogbodo’s Untold

Ogbodo’s Untold is a novella that explores the fierce battle between traditional and modern health practices. Narrated through the third person, Ogbodo weaves his narrative around a couple, Ojang and his wife Ukanyohe, whose firm belief in traditional medicine is such that even their daughter’s near death situation hardly puts them in a compromising situation. The portrayal of their daughter, the young, innocent, intelligent and loving Ahinyohe, as the grass which undergoes intense suffering when two elephants engage in a fight, makes the narrative a haunting one. Although the closure is unarguably painful and better imagined, it peculiarizes the novella and illuminates Ogbodo’s didacticism: “Endeavour to see a certified medical doctor whenever ill-health befalls you” (109). One fundamental question is: How does Ogbodo assemble his creative tools to arrive at this beautiful narrative with this clearly defined moral lesson?

One fascinating trait that Untold exhibits is its appropriateness in terms of structure. As a novella, the author puts in great efforts to cut down the length of the narrative. The characters are also not extensively developed as in a novel. This is also true of the themetisation which portrays a major theme with few less developed ones, as well as a single major plot. These traits, typical of a novella are all deployed in Untold, making it an appropriate body for Ogbodo’s narrative. It can be observed that getting the right format for the narrative and staying close to its tenets, is one right artistic step that Ogbodo takes in achieving this feat. The character of Ukanyohe, who grows from childhood to adulthood before our very eyes, makes the narrative a Bildungsroman. Thus, the narrative wouldn’t have swerved from its goal even if titled: Ukanyohe. Nevertheless, the looming secret behind the death of the warrior and the consequent curse by the hunter which must have informed the title: Untold, is equally appropriate as it emblematises the source of all the actions carried out in the novella.
In the novella, Ogbodo does not only demonstrate his knowledge of the right body for his narrative but the appropriate tools to make his narrative gripping by deploying a unique plot. One powerful tool he uses in achieving this is suspense. At the beginning of the novella, we are introduced to an enthralling encounter between the warrior and a hunter. This is an encounter that breeds curiosity in the minds of the readers but we are suspended here and a narrative that appears new emerges. Interestingly, more curiosity is likely to be built in the minds of the readers as they are expedite their reading pace, looking forward to connect the dots. This suspense is greatly aided by Ogbodo’s deliberate delay in revealing what transpired between the warrior and the hunter, which ultimately leads to the forbidding marriage between Adigwu and Onyila clans. This ignorance is expressed by the couple, Ukanyohe and Ojang, who belong to Adigwu and Onyila clans respectively, when asked by a native doctor: “No, Sir. We were only told that both clans never intermarried” (30).

Ogbodo is so glued to his craft that even when he reveals this information through the native doctor at last, he withholds another vital part: “On the strange illness of your daughter, the gods will grant the answers you seek at the right time. Now, go home and return on the twenty-first birthday of your daughter. On that day, the answers you seek will be granted…” (30-31). This is one piece of information that has a final compelling urge to push any reader to the very end of the novella, and this is interestingly its core objective. Suffice to say that, any reader who desires not to see the end of Ahinyohe’s epileptic seizures has not begun to engage the novella meaningfully.

Ogbodo must be commended for his thematic contemporaneity and relevance. Some contemporary might have felt that the likes of Achebe, Soyinka, and others have done exploring the conflict between tradition and modernity, and that nothing new can be explored from this angle. It is therefore, not just with the heart of a committed writer but also a spirit of boldness that Ogbodo confronts this vexing issue in Untold. The clash between traditional and modern health practices remains the major theme that has been exhaustively treated. Throughout the novella, the author demonstrates clearly, his side of the argument as he keeps portraying the failure of traditional medicine against the efficacy of modern medicine. The death of Ahinyohe at the end of the novella casts a dark shadow on traditional medicine and brings what seems to be its end in the narrative. The novella is a salient reminder that despite the advance in modern medicine, some people still cling to traditional medicine. The author does not in anyway, clothes his outright condemnation of traditional medicine. However, His Royal Majesty, Adirahwu N’y Igede’s abolition of only “harmful traditional health practices in his domain” (103) can be seen as Ogbodo’s call for this collaboration for a whole effect. Other minor themes such as envy, typified by Adii, education, love, and tradition among others, are all evident in the novella.

Another fascinating feature of Untold is the author’s artistic dexterity displayed in the way he realistically handles his characters. For example, Ogbodo presents Ojang and Ukanyohe with such powerful and convincing character traits that we can easily identify with them in their struggle to find solution to their daughter’s strange illness in a typical way loving parents do in real life. The novella’s realistic touch is further enhanced by the use of dialogue and striking description of places and characters, especially the native doctors consulted by Ojang and his wife, Ukanyohe. While these powerful descriptions concretize the novella’s sense of reality, the pictures they paint, leave lasting impression in the minds of readers which is undoubtedly an interesting goal a successful narrative will ever achieve. Places such as Obi, Otukpo, Oju, Obarike-Ito, Makurdi, and Benue State University Teaching Hospital among others where the actions in the novella take place, are real physical places that complement the novella’s realistic stance.
As a creative work, Ogbodo’s novella is unique in its use of what critics like Austin Warren, Rene Wellek, and Terry Eagleton call ‘peculiar language’. One way this is achieved is through the author’s use of figurative devices such as personification which is the dominant one. Expressions like: “…tears welled up, pushed together, and threw themselves over the rim of her eyes and bitterly kissed her cheeks and drenched her shirt” (49) and “Death looked at the doctor, contemptuously, but gave him thumbs up for saving Ukanyohe from its sting” (78), and the simile: “Ojang sat on the ground, crying like a baby” (77) are typical examples of this figurative language. The novella uses Standard English as its narrative language, and extends it to the characters’ language, with a mixture of local Igede dialect. While this language is commendable for educative purposes, it can’t be used to measure the characters’ level of education in the novella as native doctors, ordinary village people, students, and certified medical doctors like Dr Ohaha speak using Standard English. While this would have been considered as being too Western, Ogbodo infuses his narrative with Igede dialect to give the novella a local colour. It is thus, not strange that Igede words such as: “ugada” (18), “Obe’ okpukpu”, “Ob’ owuwu” (23), “Nolehi, Anyinyam” (39), “Obe choo” (46), “alegwu” (84) etc. are scattered all over the narrative. It is interesting to note that these Igede words are intalicised for easy identification and well explained at the glossary page of the novella for easy understanding. Ogbodo’s cultural commitment here cannot be overemphasised. As a medical doctor, the medical jargons appropriately deployed in the novella is only a confirmation of the author’s proficiency in his the medical field. These medical terms which range from “cardiac massage” (7), “ingestible analgesics” (59) to “cannula” (56) are educative, to say the least.
Though a novella, Untold is a thought provoking narrative with the potential to compel a lot of critical interpretations using different theoretical models. This is one great achievement that Ogbodo must be commended for. The novel’s surrealistic descriptions, the exploration of Ahinyohe as a reincarnated child, the cyclical nature of the plot, and the superstitious beliefs of the village people are all traits that a magical realist critic will find fascinating. While the great attention given to nature as can be seen in the various scenes where nature is described in detail will constitute a good study for an eco-critical critic, a feminist will find useful, the portrayal of women, particularly the quest to attend motherhood in the novella. There is a new study that explores the synergy between literature and medicine. This field will also find Untold, a useful site to explore. What else can be more fulfilling than to craft a work that will compel criticism from different theoretical bases?............

On the whole, Ogbodo’s Untold is a wonderful narrative that explores a serious issue in our society, especially now that the world is quickly advancing in medical practice. The novella is therefore, timely, educative, and at the same time, entertaining. The author’s handling of the techniques of setting, language, characterisation, and themetisation is quite commendable. This demonstrates the truism of Wale Okediran’s comment that these attributes portray Ogbodo as having the “mind of a writer who will go far if given the right support and direction” (Foreword).

YES, YOU CAN!

Yes, You Can! I Mean You. Yes You.

That long forgotten  Priceless Dream of yours can be re-awakened and achieved.

As for you that is about giving up on that Priceless Dream of yours, just because your Mentor; the man you hold in high esteem, and everyone else have said that you can't do it...

Wait a minute! Don't give up! Don't quit!

I am not Your Mentor, neither am I everyone else, but I am just a Tiny Voice of encouragement (A. C. Mark), whispering to  you that You Can Do It. Yes, You Can.

When all hope is lost... When everyone tells you that you can't do it... When it seems darkest... Remember my words, even when I am long gone, that "You Can do it. YES, YOU CAN!"

The only difference between the loser and the winner is ATTITUDE. You are nothing but a Winner. Keep a positive ATTITUDE.

Above all, know that God's Grace is all around you to tap from; never ignore it.

In a  nutshell, go back to your drawing board and begin and/or continue work on that your Priceless Dream because You can do it. Yes, You Can!

UNTOLD BY DR OGBODO ADIGWU CYPRIAN MARK

UNTOLD

Heartbroken, she was, as her parents wouldn't allow her to marry the man she loved. She cried all day and night; she emptied her ocean of tears. She starved and isolated herself from everyone else. She lost a reasonable weight. She had promised to take her life if she was not allowed to marry the man she loved: Romeo. All efforts by her parents to convince her not to marry Romeo but someone else, were to no avail. It was a tug of war between her and her parents. She was called Juliette. At the end, the parents gave in, gave them their blessings and they got married: Romeo and Juliette.

Years later, they gave birth to a bouncing baby girl. She grew into adulthood. One day, as I stopped by a pharmacy to get some drugs, my eyes caught up with a lady, who was nothing but a fountain of beauty. When she ordered for her drug, she was told that the price had gone up by 120%. She was astounded and cried out aloud saying "I have been living in pains all my life; something I never bargained for...." Hearing this, I turned and looked into her eyes, and I sensed sitted deep within her heart, enormous pains. I felt her pains but I didn't say a word. I just paid her bills and left silently.

Weeks later, while I was on call at the emergency room, a patient was rushed in on a couch, and walking behind was Juliette, crying and saying "Doctor, please help me... Save my daughter, I never meant this for her... Oh! God, why did you allow this to happen to me..." I quickly got up and rushed to attend to the patient: Lo and behold, it was same lady I met at the pharmacy. On getting to her, she opened her eyes and said "doctor please save me. I don't want to die... I have something to tell you when I get back on my feet again." And she breathed her last. Juliette couldn't believe her eyes, likewise Romeo.

What we both had to tell each other remain UNTOLD.

The following morning, I mounted the podium, to present the cases I had during my call hours at the breakfast meeting. And the first file I took was hers. She was called GIFT. Immediately, her memories, beginning from the first encounter to the last, flashed on my mind, and tears were let loose as everyone watched me quietly. After a while, I then pulled through and I could speak... "I lost her... I lost her... To..."

EXCERPTS FROM THE JOURNEY written by DR OGBODO ADIGWU CYPRIAN MARK: BEST SELLING NOVEL

THE JOURNEY, Written by DR OGBODO ADIGWU CYPRIAN MARK

The rounds of applause may well have informed him that his tunnel had seen the long awaited night. The tears behind his glasses-rimmed eyes could be likened to those of a long lost slave upon the gift of freedom. They were tears of joy...

THE JOURNEY  tells the sizzling tale of a young man whose very first breath of air came with challenges but as the classic poem goes, the one who sat and watched his infant head  (his mother) always showered him with love despite these ominous tragedies.  All hell broke loose when his beloved mother dies fives years later, Life's bitter pill which he had no choice but to swallow.

What is more?  At the hands of a cruel stepmother, his once tender and adored infant head saw hell. He was maltreated and victimized by his stepmother. His father, his only succour (he thought)  kicked the storms against him.

A helpless and frustrated young lad found himself at the at the "desert of life."

He had nothing to offer to the world, but hope. Not hope in the world, but hope that seemed from a strong conviction that he was created by a God and that his mother would always sit and watch over him wherever she was.

The young Professor, who stood before a crowd of people applauding and cheering him on, knew nothing of profound joy until that very moment.

Now, his desire to change the world must take its course. His name, Olewu (meaning a wise warrior).

Find out how Olewu takes the world by surprise with stunning success, despite danger, deadlock exploits and high tensed challenges.

A MEDICAL DOCTOR; DR OGBODO ADIGWU CYPRIAN MARK, AUTHORS A GREAT NOVEL

A MEDICAL DOCTOR AUTHORS A GREAT NOVEL: THE JOURNEY

DR OGBODO A. C. MARK is a Medical Doctor and an Author per excellence. He is a simple, humble, intelligent, goal getter with exemplary leadership skills. He has a magnanimous heart, a loving spirit and a cheerful smile. He is a positive thinker, orator and writer per excellence.

In acknowledgement of his outstanding merits as a leader, writer and as a medical doctor, he has received several awards of: excellence, meritorious services, outstanding leadership, hardwork and dedication to duty, punctuality and regularity.

As an Author of such a great novel, he deserves to meet with the PMB for a handshake, for he must be promoted and supported.

THE JOURNEY:

"THE JOURNEY is an original literary masterpiece that is inspiring, didactic and expository. It bears message for all status quo and types of human relationship. It is thrilling and 'A MUST READ' for all who love DIGNIFIED ACHIEVEMENT that sprung out of courage, determination and faithfulness..."

What the book reviewer, Professor Abimbola Shittu, the H. O. D. of English, Benue State University, has to say:

"THE JOURNEY, written by Ogbodo A. C. Mark, holds the attention of the reader from the first to the last page. It is instructive that Ogbodo A. C. Mark is a medical doctor by profession, and yet is an author we cannot ignore. In THE JOURNEY, Dr Mark displays an uncanny and uncommon muse that should belong to the literary artist rather than the medical scientist. This is a testimony to the author's intellect and industry... What Ogbodo A. C. Mark does in this novel is to use THE JOURNEY motif to reflect the story of Olewu. Mark reflects the story of the life of Olewu as a JOURNEY. This is akin to the rites of passage where the birth, growth, and adulthood of a character, in this case, Olewu, is reflected with all the obstacles, difficulties, rituals and triumphs. I am not sure whether Mark does this consciously or unconsciously; it is enough that we are able to deduce this motif, which is a plus for THE JOURNEY... THE JOURNEY remains a must read."
